Inflammation occurs naturally in our body as an acute immune response to protect us from danger and repair damage. The issue arises when this acute response becomes chronic - when it remains active over an extended period, fails to turn off when no longer necessary, or incorrectly targets our body's own cells and organs as foreign invaders.
In the initial response to injury, our body reacts in a panic. The cells in danger release chemicals to alert the immune system to action, which then activates a cascade of events involving the release of inflammatory cells to fight off offensive substances and heal the offended tissues. We want this process to simmer once the battle has been won, and if it is not, our body stays in panic mode at length - something that hardly sounds pleasant to read, let alone experience on a molecular level.
This chronic and uncontrolled inflammation is a backbone to every major disease or condition we experience today, including but not limited to heart disease, atherosclerosis, dementia, depression, acne, eczema, psoriasis, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, some cancers, and more.
